ETLF, Radio Voice of the Gospel (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia): March 23, 1971

Date of recording: 3/23/1971

Frequency: 11.890 MHz

Reception location: Ancaster, Ontario, Canada

Receiver and antenna: Hallicrafters S-52 using a longwire antenna

Notes: Here are two brief recordings from Radio Voice of the Gospel, station ETLF, from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In the first one, from 1971, there is significant QSB (fading) but they are in the clear. Listen for their four note drum interval signal, ID in English, and mention of the date Tuesday 23rd of March.

The second recording, also in English, is from the early 1970's during a transmission to West Africa in the 25 metre band where they are heard signing off.

Dimtsi Weyane (Tigrinya language, Clandestine): October 21, 2021

Region is facing a civil war since November 2020.

Signal received at Catacumba Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, October 21, 2021, 16h57 (UTC).

Radio Fana: August 6, 2018

Radio Fana recorded outdoors in London, UK on August 6, 2018 at 1800 UTC, on the frequency of 6110 kHz using a Tecsun PL-680 radio and a long-wire external antenna. The transmitter is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This non-directional transmission had a power rating of 100 kW. Reception improves markedly around the 30 minute mark in the recording.

Voice of Tigray Revolution: June 28, 2016

Voice of Tigray Revolution with music and talk to East Africa in Tigrinya/Afar. Transmitted at 100 kw from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Received with an Eton Satellit and Kestrel active loop in Sydney, Australia.

Radio Fana: June 27, 2016

Radio Fana broadcasting in Oromo to East Africa. Transmitted with 100 kw from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Lots of music before ending with the Ethiopian National Anthem at 2100 UTC. Received in Sydney, Australia, with an Eton Satellit and a Sangean reel antenna hanging from the window curtain.

Radio Oromiya: June 19, 2016

Almost an hour of great music from Radio Oromiya. Transmitted in Afar Oromo with 100 kw to East Africa from Addis Ababa-Gedja, Ethiopia. Received in Sydney, Australia, with a Degen DE1121 and Kestrel loop antenna.

Radio Oromiya: June 5, 2016

Radio Oromiya broadcasting in Afar Oromo to East Africa. Transmitted at 100 kw from Addis Ababa-Gedja, Ethiopia. Received in Sydney, Australia, with a Degen DE1103 and a Kestrel active loop antenna. The recording includes ID at 1900. The signal was good and the noise low and I was enjoying the music until the batteries died.  I quickly put a fresh set in but the Degen decided to spit the dummy and wouldn't work again that morning. The noise has been too high since then to attempt another recording.

Radio Ethiopia: November 17, 2008

The following recording of Radio Ethiopia was made on November 17, 2008 on 9,704.18 kHz, beginning around 2040 UTC.

This off air recording comes from a collection of archived recordings by SWAA contributor, Terry Wilson. 

Terry made this and all of his recordings in the Midwestern US on either the Ten-Tec RX-320D or Eton E1XM receivers. He used the recording facility of the Shortwave Log software.  Terry notes that any "QRM includes city power lines, street lights with bad ballasts, household electronics, and interference from Radio Havana Cuba."

Andy recorded this short eight minute clip between 02:55 - 03:00 UTC on December 15, 2013 on 6.110 MHz using an  Icom IC-R75 with a 40-foot PAR EF-SWL end-fed wire. Note that Andy used SSB to tune this very weak AM signal.
