One of the advantages of hosting a contributor-driven shortwave radio audio archive, is receiving off-air recordings of defining moments in our world history. This is certainly one of them.
SRAA contributor, Richard Langley, writes:
"I've started to convert some of my old cassette shortwave recordings to mp3 files. I've uncovered a box of about 25 tapes with recordings mostly from 1990 and 1991. This was an interesting era for shortwave. There was the reunification of Germany, the breakups of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, and the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq and then the First Gulf War. I monitored some of these events using my venerable Sony ICF-7600D receiver with the supplied wire antenna draped around my home office. I bought this receiver during a trip to Hong Kong (and the P.R.C.) in 1985. It was my first decent shortwave radio and I still have it but it has since been joined by several other receivers.

[The following] is a recording of President Mikhail Gorbachev's resignation speech as broadcast live by the World Service of Radio Moscow. As the announcer says, "a moment of history in the making." It begins at about the three-minute mark of the recording (at 17:00 UTC). The speech is followed by a program of classical music (filler), the News in Brief at 17:30 UTC, followed by part of the program "Africa as We See It."

Tuesday morning, I tuned my WWI era BC-348-Q to Global 24 on 9395 kHz. The signal, via WRMI’s transmitter, was quite strong.
At 2:00 UTC, I heard an announcement that The Mercury Theatre on the Air radio play of A Tale of Two Cities was about to begin.
Not wanting to miss an opportunity to record this timeless Dicken’s classic, I quickly switched over to the Elad FDM-S2 SDR to record the broadcast live. Fortunately, I captured the full broadcast and the fidelity is almost as good as a local station.

This is the recording of the last and final shortwave English language transmission of the Spanish Radio - Radio Exterior de Espana, broadcast to Europe. Frequency: 9665 kHz, time: 1900 GMT, date: 14 October 2014 (On October 15th 2014 there was no signal of the station at the same time on 9665 kHz). Although the station was to stream live programming in English on its website, for the moment only podcasts are available and there is no stream availability for English programmes.

I recorded this broadcast of Sri Lanka BC around 01:15 UTC on Sept 11, 2014 on 11,905 kHz. Sri Lanka BC is not an easy broadcaster to receive in eastern North America, but band conditions on the 11th were particularly favorable in the higher bands. As you’ll hear in the recording, their 125 kW signal out of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka was reasonably strong; I used my WinRadio Excalibur receiver and external multi-band horizontal delta loop antenna.
Indeed, looking through the archives, this may be the first time I've recorded Sri Lanka BC.

I’m in Keystone, Colorado at about 9,300′ (2,835 M) above sea level; mornings are crisp and chilly (38F/3C), but that doesn’t stop me from putting on a jacket, heading to the balcony and listening to Radio Australia on 9,580 kHz. Despite flaky solar conditions (flaky, frankly, is an understatement) I managed to snag RA Wednesday morning (August 27, 2014 at 13:58 UTC) on my Sony ICF-SW7600GR. There was a little fading, and a little local noise, but overall signal quality was quite good.
This recording starts a couple of minutes before the top of the hour; you’ll hear the TOTH news brief and then triple j–a brilliant show dedicated to new Australian music.

"Voice Of Korea is the international radio service of North Korea (officially known as the Democratic Republic of Korea). Most broadcasts of Voice Of Korea only have one or two stories that are either anti-American, anti-South Korean, or ant-Japanese. However, this particular broadcast's news segment seems to be solely dedicated to insulting it's enemies. Here we have North Korean commentary on the current Israel-Hamas conflict on the Gaza Strip, where the United States is blamed for the mess in their report. South Korea is declared a "colony" of the United States, and much more!
The program follows the exact same format for every broadcast:
:00 Opening signal, station identification: “This is Voice of Korea”
:01 National Anthem
:03 Song of General Kim Il Sung
:06 Song of General Kim Jong Il
:09 News, editorials (approx 15 minutes, but can be extended to full broadcast), followed by music

The broadcast was recorded using a Olympus VN-702 voice recorder hooked up to a Tecsun PL-600 Shortwave receiver using a random wire antenna. Broadcast was received on 11710 khz between1500-1557 UTC."

I recorded Radio Santa Cruz early this morning around 10:00 UTC on 6,135 kHz using my WinRadio Excalibur.
As you’ll hear in the recording, Radio Santa Cruz‘s 10 kW signal from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, was very much audible here in North America–even punching through typical noisy summer band conditions (static crashes, etc.).

This broadcast of the Voice Of Vietnam comes from a UK relay that targets North America shortwave listeners. Voice of Vietnam is interesting primarily because it comes from a communist nation. Voice of Vietnam is far more western in it's broadcasting style then Voice of Korea (one of my most listened to shortwave stations). however it's still not nearly as western as China International Radio, which uses anchors with American accents and uses the same style of reporting as domestic news broadcasts here in the states.
I used a Tecsun PL-600 connected directly into the external microphone jack of a Olympus VN-702 digital voice recorder from the headphone jack of the above mentioned receiver. I adjusted the volume of the receiver's audio output so that it didn't overload the voice recorder. The radio employed a whip antenna (about 3 feet long fully extended) and was placed in a location of my house where shortwave broadcasts receive the best.
